Have you ever wondered why your zip code impacts your quality of life?

This approach explores how housing/neighborhood, environment, healthcare, education, transportation, and economics influence our overall well-being. It also acknowledges that these conditions are impacted by social, physical, and political influences that positively or negatively affect overall quality of life by examining the institutions, access, and opportunities that exist within our reach and how they might be impacted by polices, biases, and systems.

Housing

The ability to own a home has not been offered equally to all citizens in America.

In the 1950-60s many White families were given access to federally backed home mortgages that supported the purchase of homes and accumulation of generational wealth, while families of color were denied or faced the additional hurdle of redlining (a practice of devaluing property by drawing red lines around Black neighborhoods and blue and yellow lines around other neighborhoods of color for evaluation). This severely limited access to mortgage loan funds, decreasing the ability to build wealth, maintain stability, and achieve autonomy for families of color. These impacts can still be seen in communities of color decades years later with lower home appraisals and larger shares of renter occupied properties.

Environment

The first national environmental program to protect and improve US land, water, and air quality began in the late 1960s - 70s, and was meant to help communities have a better quality of life.

The devaluing of land in communities of color often attracted industrial companies in search of cheap land to help offset the cost of these new environmental regulations limiting emissions/pollution from their operations. As communities began to fight back against the permitting of industrial and commercial hazardous waste facilities in their neighborhoods, studies were conducted showing race as the most significant factor in the siting of these facilities at the time. Close proximity to these facilities decreased the environmental health of the surrounding communities and exposed local residents to hazards that impacted air, water, and soil quality. Communities of color are still fighting similar battles today, with residents often having higher incidences of asthma, cancer, other health complications, and lower access to healthy spaces like parks.
